How Lawyers Can Stay Laser-Focused at Work - Attorney Carlos A. Gamino, Milwaukee, WisconsinAttorney Carlos Gamiño is always looking for ways to be more productive, and as a lawyer who’s always on the go, he’s tried dozens of strategies over the past several years. Here’s his take on how lawyers can stay laser-focused at work.

As lawyers, we’re pulled in dozens of different directions every day. Whether we’re at the firm’s main office or we’re working from home, it’s not easy to stay focused on what we need to get done when the “To-Do” list keeps growing and growing.

Focus Tip #1: Don’t Forget to Schedule Breaks

If you’re anything like the rest of us, your schedule is packed. But what you’re probably forgetting to add is break time. Studies have shown that taking a 5-minute break between 25-minute, hard-core work sessions can actually increase your productivity. (It’s called the Pomodoro Method, and it actually works. You can even download apps on your phone, your tablet and your PC that feature timers that keep you moving.)

Focus Tip #2: Line up Your Priorities

If you can prioritize your work-related tasks and create a list of five things that you absolutely must accomplish each day, you can stay on-task and feel like you’ve actually made progress as you tick things off the list.

Focus Tip #3: Use Your Creativity in the Morning

Even if you’re not a morning person, experts suggest that doing things that require heavy-duty brainpower before lunch is usually the best way to go. As the day wears on, we all tend to lose focus. By knocking out the tough stuff early, we can use the afternoons to work on everything else.

How do you stay focused? If you’re not an attorney, can you see these methods working for you? I always love exploring ways to maximize productivity and make life easier, so if you have any tips, feel free to share them here.
