DHS Schedules Mass Deportation - Carlos GaminoBy Carlos Gamino

According to ABC News, federal authorities are planning to launch a massive offensive against undocumented immigrants – and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

The joint operation between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security, which currently has no title, will be specifically aimed at “individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security,” according to an ICE official.

People who have received a “final order of removal on or after January 1, 2014,” according to DHS, will also be part of the nationwide sweep. According to critics, the government will be including mothers and children who came to the U.S. to escape horrid living conditions – sometimes including abuse, rape and other crimes – in the group of targeted individuals.

“[I]n the exercise of that discretion, DHS can and should develop smart enforcement priorities, and ensure that use of its limited resources is devoted to the pursuit of those priorities,” said DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson.

Director of Advocacy for the American Immigration Lawyers Association Greg Chen denounced the sweep as overly aggressive and traumatizing to the immigrant community as a whole.

The three Democratic presidential candidates chimed in, as well.

Senator Bernie Sanders calls the plans “very disturbing” and says, “We must take steps to protect children and families seeking refuge here, not cast them out.”

Secretary Hillary Clinton’s spokeswoman says that Mrs. Clinton “has real concerns about these reports,” and that “it is critical that everyone has a full and fair hearing, and that our country provides refuge to those that need it.”

What Do You Think?

Is the Department of Homeland Security overstepping their bounds, or are they well within their rights to conduct a massive operation to eject undocumented immigrants from the U.S.? Will women and children be disproportionately affected, or are critics of the operation exaggerating?

I’d love to hear what you think, so share your thoughts with me on Twitter or on Facebook.
